Classroom:Sociology major with a 2.80 GPA who was named Student Athlete of the Month in Sept. 2005. She hopes to work somewhere in the entertainment industry after she graduates in May 2007.
Character:Three months after losing her grandmother in 1997, her father was killed in a car accident – hit by a drunk driver. After going through pain, depression and anger as a result of the loss, she says she ultimately just wanted to be a good role model for her younger brother who is 2 years younger than her. Shay is positive, friendly and outgoing in all aspects of her life. She seems to know everyone in the athletic department and beyond at USC, and she has made friends with countless players on opposing teams. Has played through ankle injuries and many other ailments the past two years, choosing sturdy tape and post game ice rather than time on the sideline. Outgoing and fun-loving – sings on the bus… and in the hotel… and on the plane…
Competition:Has scored in double figures for 48 straight games, stretching from last season’s NCAA Second Round appearance by USC. Leads USC in scoring, 3-pointers, free throws, rebounds and steals this season. (Led in same categories except FTs as a junior). Is USC’s all-time 3-point scoring leader. Is a State Farm Wade Trophy Preseason Candidate, John R. Wooden Award Preseason All-America Team, Street & Smith Preseason Honorable Mention, Preseason All-Pac-10 Team. Most recently, Murphy was tabbed a Naismith Trophy Preseason Candidate.
