Classroom:Time management has been the key to Lawrence's success. He has effectively developed a balance between both academics and athletics. He consistently utilizes the services provide to him by the Student Development for Athletes program. To date he has completed more than 84 hours of one-on-one tutoring and has logged nearly 600 hours in the Study Center. His hard work and dedication have paid off as he is on track to graduate in four years and will earn his degree from the College of Professional Studies in May 2008. Armed with a bachelor of arts degree in communications, after graduation Lawrence plans to pursue a career in broadcasting and hopes that his internship experience will help him land his first job.
Character:According to St. John's coach Norm Roberts, “Geno is terrific. He is the heart and soul of our team. He gets better every day, and will continue to do that this year. He is a senior now and he has been through it all. Geno has worked to become fifth all-time in assists here at St. John’s, and he is a guy that we can always count on. He is committed to doing everything we need to do to be successful as a team, and just brings a lot to the table for us.”
Community:Lawrence has been active in fulfilling the university's Vincentian mission towards community service. During the past four years at St. John's University, he has completed more than 38 hours of community service, volunteering his time on various community service projects and organizations. As a student-athlete, Lawrence has taken his role as a leader very seriously. He has participated in the University Service day for the past three years. Each year he has also spent time during the Thanksgiving break to visit the Bread for Life soup kitchen in his hometown of Brooklyn, New York. Not only has he participated in numerous events each year, but he has also been instrumental in getting other members of his team involved. During the past two years, Lawrence and the entire men’s basketball team participated in the Campus Breast Cancer Walk to raise awareness of this important issue. In addition, he has served as an active member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the past two years.
Competition:The BIG EAST’s top returning assist man this season (5.6 assists per game) , Lawrence is also fifth on St. John’s all-time list of assist leaders with 410 entering his senior campaign. He finished in the top five in BIG EAST assists two seasons in a row, finishing fourth (5.9 assists per game) as a sophomore in 2005-06. He is listed among St. John’s all-time three-point leaders, ranking seventh with 97 for his career. He is also tied for eighth on the school's all-time steals list with 145.
